Podium For Seb In Ulster
25/08/2008
Fresh from competing on Rallye Deutschland, 20-year-old Seb Marshall secured another fine result on the Ulster Rally, the fourth round of the British Rally Championship.
Back with regular driver Adam Gould, the young pairing finished 1st in class of the British Rally Championship contenders, and a creditable tenth overall in the BRC standings.
A string of top times on Friday night's opening leg resulted in a strong lead of nearly two minutes over their rivals, this despite a costly puncture on the final stage losing them a minute.
Whilst the bad weather held off, Gould and Marshall pushed on in their Autosport Technology prepared Renault Clio, extending their lead further by the lunchtime service. The ensuing downpour ended any such plans of an easy drive to the finish though, instead becoming a fight for survival against the treacherous, mud-strewn Northern Irish lanes.
A measured drive through the final five stages saw the crew victorious again, only beaten to the rally class win by French hot-shot and Junior WRC front-runner Sebastien Ogier, who many regard as being the next Sebastien Loeb.
The result was the conclusion of a great week as Adam had been selected as the British Nomination for the Pirelli Star Driver European Shootout which takes place in Austria in late October. Competing against 20 other drivers from across Europe for the chance to win a fully funded works drive in next years Production World Rally Championship
"It's been another great weekend, finishing with top points in the BRC on this difficult event certainly underlines Adam's talent." said Seb. "Myself having crashed out of this event last year, I was keen to make amends with a good finish and I certainly achieved that."
"The news that Adam has been picked for the Pirelli European Shootout is just the icing on the cake! There'll be a lot of very good competition, but with the help and preparation we've received from the MSA British Rally Elite scheme, we'll go into it with a great shot at victory."
